Dental Emergencies We See

  • Severe toothache
  • Chipped or broken tooth
  • Knocked-out tooth
  • Lost filling or crown
  • Abscess or swelling

If you are not sure whether your situation counts, call us. Describing what is happening takes a minute and helps us decide how quickly to see you.

What to Do Right Now

Knocked-Out Tooth

Pick up the tooth by the crown, not the root. If you can, gently place it back in its socket. If you cannot, keep it in milk or saliva (not water). Get to the clinic as quickly as you can, since time matters.

Severe Toothache

Rinse with warm water and use an over-the-counter pain reliever if you need it. Do not place aspirin directly on the tooth or gum.

Chipped or Broken Tooth

Save any pieces, rinse your mouth with warm water and hold a cold compress to your cheek.

Lost Filling or Crown

Keep the piece and avoid chewing on that side. Bring it with you.

Swelling of the Face or Jaw

Treat swelling as potentially serious and call us immediately. If you also have trouble breathing or swallowing, go to the nearest hospital emergency department.

How Our Emergency Visit Works

  1. Call first. Tell us what happened and when it started. We will advise you and arrange your visit.
  2. Care at home. We tell you what to do until you arrive, such as how to protect a knocked-out tooth or manage pain.
  3. Emergency exam. The dentist examines you and takes an X-ray if needed to find the cause.
  4. Treatment plan. We explain your options and costs before treatment. Depending on the problem, care may include a filling, a crown, a root canal, an extraction or reinserting a knocked-out tooth.

Emergency Dental Care or Urgent Dental Care?

An emergency involves trauma, severe or sudden pain, uncontrolled bleeding or facial swelling. Urgent dental care covers problems that should be treated soon but are more stable, such as a lingering toothache or recurring wisdom tooth trouble. If you are unsure, call and we will help you decide.

After Your Emergency Treatment

  • Follow the instructions you are given for the treatment you had, such as waiting for numbness to wear off before eating.
  • Take any medication exactly as advised.
  • Avoid chewing on the treated tooth until it has been fully restored.
  • Book any follow-up visit, such as a crown after a root canal, to protect the tooth.
  • Call us if pain, swelling or bleeding gets worse.

Cost, CDCP, Insurance and Financing

We do not publish a fixed price list, because emergency treatment depends on what the dentist finds. We are a CDCP-approved provider and bill most major insurance plans directly. The front desk can give you an estimate over the phone, and 0% financing is available for patients who qualify.
