What Are Wisdom Teeth and Why Are They Removed?

Wisdom teeth are the last molars, usually appearing in the late teens or early twenties. When there is not enough room, they can come in at an angle or stay trapped in the gum or jawbone. These are called impacted wisdom teeth. They can cause pain, swelling, infection, damage to the neighbouring tooth and gum problems, and removal is often recommended.

Signs Your Wisdom Teeth May Need to Come Out

  • Pain or swelling at the back of the jaw
  • Red, swollen or bleeding gums around a back tooth
  • Bad taste or bad breath near the back of your mouth
  • Difficulty opening your mouth fully
  • Crowding or damage to the teeth in front
  • Repeated flare-ups of infection around a partly erupted tooth

An X-ray shows how the teeth are positioned, even if you have no symptoms.

Benefits of Having Problem Wisdom Teeth Removed

  • Relieves pain and recurring infection
  • Protects neighbouring teeth and bone
  • Easier to treat before problems build up
  • Impacted and complex cases handled in-house
  • A clear plan from the first exam

How Wisdom Tooth Removal Works

  1. Exam and X-rays. The dentist checks the position of each tooth and explains your options.
  2. Comfort. The area is numbed with local anesthetic. Sedation is available in some cases, and nitrous oxide can help if you are anxious.
  3. Removal. The tooth is removed, sometimes in sections if it is impacted.
  4. Healing instructions. You leave with clear aftercare instructions, including how to protect the blood clot and prevent dry socket.

Before Your Visit

  • Bring any past X-rays and a list of medications.
  • Tell us about medical conditions and allergies.
  • Plan to rest for the remainder of the day, and arrange a ride home if sedation is planned.
  • Stock soft foods such as yogurt, soup and mashed potatoes.
  • Bring insurance or CDCP details so we can verify coverage.

After Your Treatment

  • Bite gently on gauze as instructed to help a clot form.
  • Some swelling and discomfort for several days is normal. Cold packs on the cheek for the first day can help.
  • Do not rinse forcefully, spit, use a straw or smoke for the first days. These can dislodge the clot and cause dry socket.
  • Eat soft foods and keep the area clean as directed, including gentle salt-water rinses after the first day.
  • Call us if pain gets worse after a few days, bleeding does not stop, swelling grows or you develop a fever.

Cost, CDCP, Insurance and Financing

We do not publish a fixed price list because the cost depends on how many teeth and how complex they are. We are a CDCP-approved provider, and CDCP includes oral surgery services, depending on your plan. We bill most major insurers directly and offer 0% financing for qualifying patients. You will get a personal cost before treatment.

Why Choose In-House Wisdom Tooth Removal?

Many general dental clinics refer impacted wisdom teeth to a separate surgeon. At Sauga Smiles Dental, Dr. Rohit Khurana handles these cases in the clinic, so you see the same team for your exam, treatment and follow-up. That can mean fewer appointments at different offices and one place to call if something does not feel right during healing.

When Should Wisdom Teeth Be Checked?

Wisdom teeth are usually assessed in the late teens and twenties, but problems can appear at any age. If you have had repeated gum infections at the back of your mouth, or an X-ray shows a wisdom tooth pressing on its neighbour, it is a good idea to have them looked at. Regular dental cleanings and exams give your dentist the chance to spot problems early.
