Tooth Extraction in Mississauga
Sauga Smiles Dental performs tooth extractions in Mississauga when a tooth is too damaged, decayed or infected to be saved. Our aim is always to keep your natural tooth where possible, but when removal is the right choice, we do it comfortably, explain how to heal, and talk about how to replace the tooth. Our clinic is on Burnhamthorpe Road West and open seven days a week.

What Is a Tooth Extraction?
A tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket in the jawbone. A simple extraction is for a tooth that is visible in the mouth. A surgical extraction may be needed for a tooth that is broken at the gum line or not fully erupted. For impacted wisdom teeth, see our wisdom teeth removal page.
When Is an Extraction Needed?
- A tooth broken or decayed beyond repair
- Advanced gum disease that has loosened the tooth
- A severe infection that cannot be resolved with a root canal
- A tooth blocking others from coming in properly
- Teeth that need to be removed as part of a larger treatment plan
Your dentist will first discuss whether the tooth can be saved.
Benefits of Extraction When It Is Needed
- Relieves pain and clears infection
- Protects neighbouring teeth and bone
- Prevents infection from spreading
- Allows planning for a replacement
- Comfortable with local anesthetic
How Tooth Extraction Works
- Exam and X-ray. The dentist confirms the tooth cannot be saved and explains your options.
- Numbing. The area is numbed with local anesthetic. Nitrous oxide is available for anxious patients.
- Removal. The tooth is loosened and removed gently. You will feel pressure but not pain.
- Aftercare. Gauze is placed, and you receive instructions for healing.
Before Your Visit
- Tell us about medical conditions, medications and any blood thinners.
- Eat a light meal beforehand.
- Bring insurance or CDCP details so we can verify coverage.
- Ask about replacing the tooth, such as an implant, bridge or denture.
- Tell us if you feel anxious so we can plan.
After Your Treatment
- Bite gently on gauze for the time your dentist advises to help a clot form.
- Avoid straws, spitting, forceful rinsing and smoking for the first days, to protect the clot and prevent dry socket.
- Use cold packs on the cheek and eat soft foods for the first day or two.
- Gently rinse with warm salt water from the second day, as advised.
- Call us if bleeding does not stop, pain gets worse after a few days, swelling grows or you have a fever.
Replacing the Tooth
A gap can lead neighbouring teeth to drift. Options include dental implants, crowns and bridges and dentures. Your dentist will help you pick what suits you.
Cost, CDCP, Insurance and Financing
We do not publish a fixed price list because the cost depends on whether the extraction is simple or surgical. We are a CDCP-approved provider and CDCP includes oral surgery services, depending on your plan. We bill most major insurers directly and offer 0% financing for qualifying patients. The front desk gives you a personal cost first.
Saving a Tooth Versus Removing It
Wherever possible, we try to keep your natural tooth. A root canal followed by a crown can save many badly damaged teeth. Extraction is recommended when there is not enough healthy tooth left, when infection or gum disease has damaged the supporting bone, or when a tooth is in the way of other treatment. Your dentist will explain why in plain language, using your X-rays, so that you understand the decision.
Comfort During Your Extraction
Local anesthetic numbs the tooth and the surrounding area before treatment starts. Many patients are more worried about the idea of an extraction than the procedure itself. If you feel anxious, tell us when you book. Sedation dentistry with nitrous oxide is available to help you feel relaxed, and the team will explain each step as it happens.
